Emor, from the Book of Leviticus.

Leviticus 22:18 is a particularly significant verse in that it describes the non-Israelite participating in the religious life of the community.  “When any person of the House of Israel or any non-Israelite presents an offering to the Lord….”

From this we learn that in ancient Israel, non-Jews participated in the spiritual life of the Jewish community and their contributions were welcomed.  In fact, in the psalms there are passages which celebrate the “yirei Adonai”, the non-Jews who came to the ancient Temple to participate in the Festivals.  The inclusion of Jews and non-Jews in the religious life of the community is not a new phenomenon, but rather one that goes back to the very origins of the Israelite religion.    Our efforts to better welcome all who come to our doors is well grounded in ancient traditions.  At a time of increased division and disunity, this ancient message is particularly relevant.
